Complete the following two essay assignments. (You must complete both essays.) You need to submit your essays by uploading them into Blackboard by the start of class as MS Word or PDF documents only. Essays are to be double-spaced, in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. Each essay is to be between 750 and 1500 words (not including the reference list). You are free to write more, but please remember that quality is more important than quantity.
1. In readings and discussion, we have defined race as an idea that is often ascribed to biology but that is actually deeply connected to differences in power.
Explain how race is connected not to biology, but to differences in power. Give historical examples of different racial categorizations to support your argument.
Explain how racial categories have been used in the US census, including how those categories have changed over time. Link these changes to the point that race is about power, not biology.
Starting with the 2000 census, people have been able to select more than one racial category for themselves. Explain the arguments that were given for and against this change, and link those arguments to the point that race is about power
