technical report

The dark side of personality refers to ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that cause problems for
self-regulation and interpersonal functioning. One well-regarded measure of dark side personality tendencies
is the Short Self Report Psychopathy Inventory. This questionnaire measures psychopathic tendencies in
interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, and antisocial domains. The item sets for the self-report psychopathy
measure, and the subscale each item belongs to, are listed below. The scale for the questionnaire is 1
strongly disagree (that the statement describes them) to 5 (strongly agree that the statement describes
them). The measure has good utility in clinical settings, but its use in occupational domains is
controversial owing to the sensitive nature of certain items in the questionnaire.
An occupational psychologist working with a banking organization (the client) that wants to screen out
psychopathic individuals from the workplace. New regulation since the financial crisis, coupled with the
shift to a focus on sustainability and long term growth rather than short term profits, means that a new and
more responsible types of workers are required to achieve organizations goals. The occupational psychologist
has recommended screening potential new workers by using a brief version of the Psychopathy Inventory. The
client organization has agreed to use the test in job selection if a pilot study proves successful. The
client has administered the questionnaire to more than 300 internal workers, and asked the occupational
psychologist to analyse the results. The participants have also completed a brief “Counter-productive Work
Behaviour (CPWB) scale”, which assesses whether workers engage in behaviour that detracts from organizational
effectiveness. For example, this might include ignoring emails or calls from co-workers, and getting to work
late and leaving early.
The items are also listed for the CPWB scale. The scale for these items is 1 (not very often) to 5 (very
often). Your task is to analyze the data that has been collected and provide a recommendation about the
suitability of the questionnaire for the bank. To do so, you will need to answer the follow questions in a
brief technical report.
1. Data cleaning and screening must be undertaken and described, for example, to account for the numerous
-999 values that describe missing data. Also, if your analyses require it, you must examine univariate and
multivariate normality. Describe your process for preparing the data set for subsequent analyses clearly so
that the reader can assess the appropriateness of the steps you have taken.
2. What evidence can you provide from your analyses that support a proposed four-factor structure for the
psychopathy questionnaire? Please note that there are many items with low endorsement rates, hence, a factor
extraction method that accounts for this must be used. Describe:
a. the rationale for the extraction technique selected;
b. the rationale for the rotation technique implemented,
c. the basis for choosing to accept or reject a four factor solution,
d. a clear interpretation of the factor loading matrix and/or factor pattern and/or structure coefficients
(as required for your particular strategy);
e. an overall conclusion concerning what factor structure is supported
3. Derive suitable score/s for the psychopathy scale, based on the outcome of questions 1 and 2, present
means and standard deviations for each of the factors you extract in the raw score metric, using simple sums
of the individual items, and reversing items where appropriate.
4. Calculate scale reliabilities using an appropriate reliability methodology.
5. Graph an item response curve for one item from one of the scales using Excel (or SPSS).
6. Report the correlations and p-values between each of the psychopathy factors and the CPWB scale.

In addressing these points, you should write a technical report presenting your analyses and conclusions
about the appropriateness of this measure for screening in recruitment at the banking organization. There is
a 2000 word limit for this assignment. You may include a maximum of five tables and 3 figures in addition to
this word limit.
